The Yankees go with another High Risk/ High Reward pick, In doing so The New York Yankees select injured... Brad ELDRED • First Baseman • Pittsburgh Pirates.
Roto: Eldred showed ample power after reaching the majors last season, but because he struck out so much and proved to be rough defensively at first base, the Pirates opted to acquire Sean Casey to start over him this season. Now he'll head back to Triple-A and try to put up the kind of numbers that will make the Pirates think about trading Casey in July. Eldred is already capable of hitting 30-35 homers per year in the majors. Still, he might not be an above average player while doing it. He’s not ready to hit for average and he may never draw a lot of walks. A full year in Triple-A might be for the best.

The Yankees select...Merkin VALDEZ • Relief Pitcher • San Francisco Giants.
ITD: Acquired in a deal with the Braves for Russ Ortiz, Valdez features a high 90’s fastball and developing slider and changeup. Built similar to fellow Giants pitcher Latroy Hawkins, Valdez battled injuries in 2005 and has moved to the bullpen, and looks like a future closer in waiting, as many scouts questioned his ability to start even before injury. However he still has a ton of upside and only being 23, the Giants can take their time with him.

The Yankees select...James LONEY • First Baseman • Los Angeles Dodgers
ITD: Drafted in the first round, Loney looked like a stud after he dominated in his pro debut. However, Loney has struggled in full season leagues. He does posses tremendous talent. With a beautiful left handed swing, Loney shows 30 HR potential. Right now he is hitting mostly line drives to the gaps. Loney has a solid approach at the plate. In the field, Loney has gold glove abilities at first base. He also has an excellent arm. Scouts are unsure of why Loney does not dominate like he did in his pro debut. Loney does show an excellent age to league ratio. Some people have given up on Loney, but he still has the potential to become an all star first baseman.

Since there are only 3 picks left and we are in the "Supplemental Round", I think we can afford to relax the 24-hour clock. Especially since we've got Memorial Day weekend upon us.
I've emailed Osborne about his picks being "on the clock" and he has been pretty responsive in the past. I'd expect we'll get this thing closed out over the weekend, or (at the latest) Tuesday.
Thanks to everyone for a highly competitive, entertaining, and trade-frenzied draft. It is enjoyable to be in a league with a knowledgable crew of wheeler-dealers.
- TFAZ
P.S., Even when the draft is done, don't be a stranger. We will use this website to monitor our Minor Leaguers and document various trades / transactions involving Minor Leaguers.
