1) You own all players from your MLB franchise (all minor league players included) and during the season may add/drop these players at anytime and as often as you wish. However, if one of your players is traded or released while dropped from your roster (30 man + DL in season & 30 man off season) you lose rights to that player.
2) You can only add/drop players from your MLB organization. If you drop a player from another organization you lose rights to that player.
3) You do not have to protect any of your rookies**. If any of your rookies** are traded during the season, you will have 10 days to add that player(s) or keep vacant spot(s) if they're not in the database or forfeit rights of player(s). All owners are responsible for keeping track of their own players.
4) In the off season if any of your rookies** or season final 30 man roster players are traded you may choose to keep your traded player(s) and the incoming player(s) will be exposed to the draft provided they are in the database. If they are not drafted they will default to their new franchise. You may also choose to drop your protected player(s) from your roster and keep incoming player(s) if not owned by another league team.
5) All rosters shall be trimmed to 30 by the last day of the season. Players will not be protected by the DL in the off season.
6) We will hold a 3 round non-snake preseason draft every year. Draft positions will be inverse order of the previous season's final standings. Then a 3 round draft at the All Star break with draft order inverse of standings.
7) Any player in Yahoo not belonging to a league franchise is eligible for the draft. Only players in the yahoo database may be drafted.
8) Only players listed in the Yahoo database may be traded. During the season players must be on your active roster to be traded. There will be no trading during the draft. And no trading of players for draft picks.
**A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season(s), he has exceeded 130 AB or 50 IP in the Major league.

The way I understood it was that both drafts (pre-season & all-star break) would consist of 3 rounds. Going forward 3 round drafts yes, I was only saying the first draft was 10 rounds.
Each team would keep 30 players & load them into Yahoo. When the draft starts, we would pick up our drafted player & drop a player to make room for him. This should work this year but at some point non-franchise players will be dropped to add new players. Those dropped players should then be part of the draft pool.
The only players from our major league teams who would be protected in case of a real life trade would be those who are still eligible for rookie status (less than 130 at bats or 50 innings pitched) There was never a clear definition of "rookie" or "prospect" they were classified as MLB vs minor league players. Using rookie eligibility may clarify that.
In the case of a Mitch Moreland, if he is traded in real life & isn't on a 30 man roster, he will be lost by the Rangers.
I hope this makes it easier to understand, although Ken has the final say in how the rules are interpereted.

this is also my question... seems like it is an easy way to ultimately have 35+ keepers. really limits the draft pool. this league is a bit more confusing to me than the others, but I look forward to some clarification. I can't say this is incorrect as I understand it. Originally, it was going to be a three round inaugural draft but was changed to 10. So yes in theory there could eventually be 57 or so keepers. So perhaps we should at some point consider dropping only non-franchise players to create roster spots for the (optional) draft. Two teams have been eliminated so that should help some with the player pool. I would have like to decrease lineups and rosters positions significantly to have it more inline with an actual lineup. Something else to consider going forward. Rules edited to clarify.(Hopefully)

"Am I correct in understanding that whether or not we place players from our own organizations on our keeper list, they remain our property unless they are traded? That is correct. If traded, THEN we have the option of placing them on our roster Yahoo or ceeding our rights to that player."This is not correct, you only have the option to add "minor league" players(not on a 25 man MLB roster) that are traded or released. Players on a MLB 25 man roster are lost if not on your (30 man off season or 30 man + DL in season) roster. See #1 & #3 "For example, if I don't put Mitch Moreland (TEX) on my keeper list so that I can keep Bobby Parnell (NYM), Moreland is still mine and not exposed to the draft. (Unless he gets traded before the draft and I choose not to put him on my keeper list.)"That is correct except for the last part of the sentence in parentheses.

I simply cut and pasted my final roster from last season. Is that what we are supposed to do to determine the roster we start with this season? We didn't have any separate "prospect" lists or anything in this league last year, did we? I can't remember and I couldn't find anything in the messages thread in last year's league. I'm assuming the final rosters is what we start with this year. Yes...start with 2011 final rosters and we'll make adjustments as needed for off season trades.

how are we doing keepers for this league? I'm going to try to get everyone to load their own keepers and I'll add the ones some of you won't be able to load. We'll have 27-30 keeper slots depending on the # of optional draft picks you wish to have. Also traded prospects may be kept per rule 7 either as an empty roster slot if not in the database or in lieu of a draft pick. Example #1: Red Sox may keep Kyle Weiland and expose Mark Melancon to the draft or choose to keep Melancon. Example #2: Nationals may keep A. J. Cole using an empty roster leaving 26 players and 1 empty slot or keep or keep 27 players plus 1 empty slot and draft only 2 players.
